With an estimated 50 million people in the US suffering from acne, it comes as no surprise that acne scars are one of the most common reasons for people to feel unhappy with their skin. Severe acne can lead to very uneven skin and tonic acne scars that many feel self-conscious about. Luckily, there is a range of cosmetic scar therapy treatments available at our med spa in Austin that can help. Today, we’ll take a look at how cosmetic fillers can be used in conjunction with Microneedling to dramatically improve the smoothness of your skin, for those suffering from acne scars or a single large facial scar.

WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling is the process of puncturing the skin with incredibly fine needles, usually via a roller or specialized mechanical device, in order to stimulate healing and make the surface of the skin smoother. The procedure is also referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy since it stimulates the production of new collagen in the treated areas. Collagen functions as the building blocks of your skin. When tissues are damaged, your skin produces more collagen, in order to repair itself. By Microneedling acne scars, it is possible to stimulate collagen production, stimulating new skin growth and thus reducing the appearance of the scars and leaving skin looking smoother and healthier.

HOW CAN A COSMETIC FILLER HELP ACNE SCARS?

Many cosmetic fillers, including Restylane and Perlane, are formulated with hyaluronic acid, which helps to stimulate the production of collagen. Many people may choose a dermal filler with hyaluronic acid because it helps to naturally plump and smooth skin, as well as physically replacing lost volume. When used prior to Microneedling treatments, it can help kick-start the collagen production process in the area and encourage your skin to heal faster and more efficiently. This results in a much smoother result than when using Microneedling on its own.

IS COLLAGEN THERAPY REALLY WORTH IT FOR ACNE SCARS?

Microneedling and cosmetic fillers are both reasonably inexpensive procedures, which is ideal for those who don’t have the budget to accommodate expensive laser treatment for facial scars. Downtime is kept to a minimum. After both Microneedling and cosmetic fillers, your skin will feel a little tender and may appear swollen and bruised for one to two days. Recovery won’t prevent you from continuing with your normal day to day activities. We recommend having a hyaluronic acid dermal filler at least one month before your first Microneedling treatment, to give skin adequate time to heal. However, since fillers can last up to one year, you can have repeat Microneedling treatments within the year, in order to maximize results.
