Microdermabrasion Q&A
Microdermabrasion treatments in Austin seems to be quickly growing in popularity and we’ve seen a huge number of inquiries about the procedure since introducing our MicroPen and SkinPen devices. We love sharing our knowledge about these exciting cosmetic procedures and know how important it is for our patients to be fully prepared before choosing any type of treatment. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of our most frequently asked microdermabrasion questions to help you figure out if it’s the correct anti-aging procedure for you.
What is a microdermabrasion treatment?
Microdermabrasion treatment is a term that covers a series of skin resurfacing and rejuvenation techniques. It can be performed with tools like the SkinPen or MicroPen, both of which use incredibly fine needles to penetrate the very top layers of skin. By gently damaging these layers, the skin is forced to heal and renew itself, growing new tissues along the way and producing collagen and elastin, both of which help to plump and lift the skin. Microdermabrasion can therefore, help to smooth out uneven skin and create a fresher, brighter complexion.
Can microdermabrasion treatments help acne?
Since it provides gentle abrasion of the skin, microdermabrasion can help to clear out pores for those who suffer from persistent blackheads and enlarged pores. However, it’s not always the best treatment for acne if the skin is covered with lots of raised, sore lesions. Despite this, it could be used alongside other acne treatments such as lasers to help resurface and smooth recovered skin, and it can even help to minimize the appearance of old acne scars.
Can microdermabrasion remove moles?
Since only the very top layers of skin are targeted during microdermabrasion treatment it’s not really a suitable treatment for raised moles. The best course of action to take would be to remove the mole surgically, and then consider microdermabrasion to alleviate the appearance of any remaining scars once the area has fully healed. However, microdermabrasion can help to reduce the appearance of other types of pigmentation such as age spots (also known as liver spots) and sun damage.
Are microdermabrasion results instant?
Microdermabrasion involves gently puncturing the skin to stimulate healing and the production of growth factors, so you need to allow some time for the skin to recover and rejuvenate before you see results. Usually, the skin remains red and a little swollen for a few days, but once this mild inflammation subsides you’ll notice that your skin looks fresher, brighter, smoother and more youthful.
Can microdermabrasion tighten skin and remove wrinkles?
Although it won’t completely obliterate deep set lines and wrinkles, microdermabrasion can help to gently plump and tighten the skin to alleviate the appearance of fine lines and crepey-looking skin. Many of our Austin microdermabrasion patients combine the treatment with other procedures, such as
Botox or Juvederm, in order to target both deep and fine lines.
Does microdermabrasion hurt?
This is perhaps one of the most common questions we’re asked by patients who are new to microdermabrasion. Since the needles used in microdermabrasion procedures are incredibly fine, they do not cause much discomfort at all. However, we often use topical numbing creams on the skin before the procedure starts to ensure discomfort is kept to an absolute minimum, particularly in sensitive areas such as around the eyes.
