There’s no denying that as we age, there are inevitable changes to our body which seem beyond our control. At our medical spa we aim to help our clients to fight the natural aging process and retain their youthful appearance for as long as possible, but one thing we’re regularly asked is whether it’s really possible to prevent facial aging. Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple remedy for aging, but there are plenty of things you can do to keep skin as youthful as possible for as long as possible.

No matter what we do, there are three aspects of facial aging that are beyond our control.

The pull of gravity which keeps our feet on the ground also has an impact on our skin. Over the years, gravity causes our skin to sag and there’s simply no way of avoiding its effects.

Our genetics have a big impact on our appearance as we get older, which is why many of us compare ourselves to our parents when we begin to notice signs of aging. Some of us are simply more susceptible to wrinkles and facial sagging than others as a result of our genes, or our bodies are more prone to react severely to other external factors, such as UV exposure.

The natural shape of our bone structure and the strength of our muscles can influence the ways in which we age. For example, someone with particularly strong, active muscles on the forehead will be more susceptible to wrinkles in that area. There is nothing we can do about our natural anatomy and the ways in which signs of aging show themselves on our unique faces.

In order to attempt to minimize the uncontrollable effects of aging, there are certain factors we can control to look after our bodies and skin as much as possible.

A balanced, nutrient-rich diet can help skin to remain healthy and hydrated for as long as possible. Avoid excessive amounts of fats, sugar and processed foods and be sure to consume plenty of fruit, vegetables and water.

Alcohol consumption

Skin discoloration can be caused by excessive alcohol consumption, and those who overindulge in alcohol are also more prone to spider veins which can make someone look older than their years. In the long term, alcohol abuse can also cause muscles to weaken and make facial skin more susceptible to wrinkles and folds.

The repeated puckering of lips around a cigarette can cause excessive wrinkles around the mouth. Plus, smoking reduces oxygen levels throughout the body which has an impact on the skin’s health and makes it more susceptible to premature aging.

Sun protection

Wrinkles, dull skin and sun spots can all occur as a result of overexposure to UVA and UVB rays, so protecting skin from the sun is a must. You should wear a good quality sunscreen whenever you spend time in the sun and choose a moisturizer with SPF protection to wear every day, even when it’s overcast.

Although many cosmetic procedures are seen as remedies to aging, many can also be used to help prevent the signs of aging too.

By relaxing the facial muscles, Botox can reduce the movement of facial skin in order to smooth out existing wrinkles and prevent new deep set wrinkles from occurring.

Chemical peels

When applied topically, chemical peels work to gently shed the top layers of skin to reveal, fresh, smooth skin underneath. When performed regularly, they can maintain a youthful, vibrant look to the skin.

Since this treatment works to stimulate new tissue growth, it can help to keep skin looking fresh and youthful. Plus, it helps to release natural growth factors and stimulate collagen production, which is important for keeping skin plump, smooth and free from wrinkles.
